Angry Kid: Here's Help

Angry Kid: Here's Help

There are lots of reasons children become angry.

Here are just a few:

Intense Temperament
Lack of Coping Skills
Developmental Lags
Poor Self-regulation
Inability to Delay Gratification
Social Skills Deficits
Learned Behavior
Environmental
Task Demands Exceed Abilities
Low Frustration Tolerance

The list goes on and on. When you are caught in the "heat of the moment" with your child, you might not too much be concerned about the reason behind the behavior, as much as you care about getting things back on an even keel.

Angry Kids Can Be Like a Grease Fire

If we think about anger like a fire, and in particular, a grease fire...we know we have to handle it very carefully. There are certain "Do's and Dont's". We know throwing water on a grease fire exacerbates things.

Baking soda is the antidote!

Be the Baking Soda!

When your child is in the throes of anger, be the baking soda! That can be pretty challenging to do when your child's anger triggers your own anger.

We have to choose our words wisely.

What we say and do can escalate or help kids settle down.

We know that yelling at an angry child, or responding with your own defensive brain, exacerbates the emotion and amplifies the problem.
